Not much text, the pictures say it all.

I taught another class!

1/20/2013

Last Sunday I taught another class, it is only the third time I have taught a metals class and the other two were Viking Knit, so this was my first "real" metals class. For this class, the subject was a Synclastic cuff which is not only an easy technical subject but a fun cuff to make.

I had 6 students in the class and they were a great bunch. We started at 10 am; took a 45 minute break for lunch and finished up a around 4:30 to 5:00 pm. Unfortunately the shop only had one soldering station set up so everyone had to wait a bit to solder their frames on the silver but since the conversation was good, I don't think the wait was too bad for everyone.

One of the best parts of the day was teaching everyone to do stick soldering. I have to admin that early last year, I was horrible at this technique.; now, 6 months later, here I was teaching it.  I have even heard back from a few of the students that they been practicing and they like this way of soldering for larger items.

Here are pictures of the class and two finished pieces by students.

What arrived yesterday.

1/5/2013

A box arrived for me yesterday. I was from SC Studios LLC.
Inside was SEVEN bricks of pitch and chasing and repousse tools.

The pitch is a 50/50 blend of soft and hard, preferred by master metalsmith, and teacher Valentin Yotkov.  This will go into a new 12" pitch pot.

Now, about those tools..
Not just any tools,
Not just one or two liners,
Not a two or three embossers,
      Not three or four  planishers...
but the entire freak'n  MASTER SET.

How many tools are in the master set you are asking yourself

There are EIGHTY SIX Tools to be exact.
                                                                                      WOW
And when I start to use them, hopefully tomorrow, I will let you know how they work.
IF YOU WANT (and who does not) a few of these tools or the entire master set ...
  • For SC Studios directly, email Saign at SAIGNC 'at' GMAIL 'dot' COM (replace the dot and at with the appropriate symbols).  You can get individual tools or the entire set from him
  • From Otto Frei.  For tools, look for the Master set or those sets marked "USA Made" and the Pitch is marked "Made in California".
  • From Rio Grande. Pitch and Tools, each set is a different size but is an assortment of texturing tools
  • From Contenti.   Each set is a different size but the set is an assortment of tools
  • From FDJTools. Pitch and various tool sets including some that are NOT in the master set (which I will have to investigate further)
Picture
The entire set laid out on my desk.

Looking through the search terms that people use here on The Adventurous Silversmith, there are some odd ones but over the past few months, it seems that people are looking for books.

Thus I have started another page called Library  and it is here that I will be listing the books that are on my shelf that I have aquired over the years.

I have put a few already and it will grow over the next few weeks.

I hope this assist people.
